Situated in south-western Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh is a richly fertile area of striking beauty scarred by its violent history. Karabakh includes Daglig (Mountainous or Nagorno) and Aran (Lowland) Karabakh. “Nagorno” stands here for “mountainous” in Russia. The Nagorny-Karabakh occupied the south-eastern part of the Lesser Caucasus and covered an area of 4,388 square kilometres. The territory of the region stretched for 120 kilometres from north to south and for 35-60 kilometres from east to west. Karabakh encloses five administrative districts of Azerbaijan: Askaran, Hadrut, Agdere, Khojavand and Shusha. The main town is Khankandi.
