- The name of Karabakh roots from the
Azerbaijani words “qara (kara)” (black) and “bağ”
(garden). As a name of
Azerbaijani territories the expression of “Karabakh” is
met in the resources of the 7th century B.C.
The formation history of “Karabakh” as a definite
province and region of Azerbaijan gives opportunity for
scientific explanation of its etymology. Because the
word of “qara (kara)” also means “thick”, “dense”,
“great”, “dark”, and etc. in Azerbaijani and other
Turkic languages. In this view, “Karabakh” means “qara
bağ (kara bakh)”, that is
“great garden”, “thick garden”, “dense garden”, “scenic
garden”. Thus as Karabakh itself, the word of “Karabakh”
belongs to Azerbaijani nation.
The interesting one is that
“Karabakh” has no meaning and explanation in Armenian.
And it proves once more how native is the name and the
territory for Azerbaijan.
